Central Louisiana has enjoyed an increasing average employment rate, which is expected to rise even more with the arrival of new businesses and the expansions happening at several companies (CLEDA).
According to the Louisiana Workforce Commission 2011 Unemployment Rates, between January and April, this region’s unemployment rate decreased from 9% to 7.9%. Compared to a state rate for the month of April of 7.4% and the United States rate of 8.7%, the region is faring well in this economic climate (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Local employment data indicate that the unemployment rate for this region is expected to decrease even more as potential workers are trained to fill the over 500 job openings identified between now and 2013 by a survey of local employers (CLTC, 2011).
According to a press release from the White House, Office of the Press Secretary on June 08, 2011, the manufacturing sector currently employs over 11 million Americans, and by itself it would be one of the 10th largest economies in the world. At a time when 2.7 million manufacturing employees are 55 years of age and older (who are likely to leave the workforce within the next 10 years), younger workers must be trained to meet the workforce demands (White House, 2011).
The Regional Labor Market Area (RLMA) 6, which includes Avoyelles, Catahoula, Concordia, Grant, LaSalle, Rapides, Vernon, and Winn parishes projects an employment change from 2008 to 2018 to include an additional 6,415 individuals to be employed.
